Ever noticed that a lot of the fonts on the web are all the same? That's because there are a fairly limited number of web-safe fonts. Why is this? Well, the fonts you use on your PC are only installed on your PC and normally come with software packages such as MS Office. These font are not neccessarily on everyones PC and they are not available on the web.
The fonts that are most safe to use are:
- Arial / Helvetica
- Times New Roman / Times
- Courier New / Courier
Other options that usually work cross-platform are:
- Palatino
- Garamond
- Bookman
- Avant Garde
Fonts that work on Windows and MacOS but not Unix+X are:
- Verdana
- Georgia
- Comic Sans MS
- Trebuchet MS
- Arial Black
- Impact
The only way to use non web fonts are to save the text as an image in a design package like photoshop.
Looking for a 'different' font to use?
There are numerous free font resource sites including webfontlist.com and fontparadise.com where you can download fonts to use on your PC.
Installing fonts on your PC
- Download you font and extract from any zip files.
- Navigate to C;// > WIndows > Fonts
- Then go to FIle > Install New Fonts
- Navigate to the font file and that should do it!
- You should then be able to see the font in your word processor, design package etc...
Enjoy!
